Can't Connect to a GTA Connected Server? Fixes for Players and Hosts

Fix GTA Connected join problems: wrong game EXE or dropdown, a GTA version that needs downgrading, port 22000 closed for UDP or TCP, or a hidden server.

When friends cannot connect to a GTA Connected server, the cause is almost always one of five things: the launcher points at the wrong game EXE, the Game dropdown is set to a different GTA than the server runs, the player's copy of GTA needs downgrading (GTA IV Complete Edition especially), the host has not opened port 22000 for both UDP and TCP, or the server has serverbrowser set to false. Work out first whether the problem is on one player's PC or affects everyone, because that splits the list in half.

GTAC is a small community project, so there is no support desk behind it. The checks below come from the official wiki and FAQ, in the order that solves the most cases.

First: one player or everyone?

  • Only one person cannot join, others can: the problem is on their side. Go to the player fixes.
  • Nobody can join, or nobody sees the server: the problem is the server or its network. Go to the host fixes.
  • Even you cannot join from the same network as the server: try the server's local IP. Many home routers do not handle connecting to your own public IP from inside the network.

Player fixes

1. The launcher is pointing at the wrong game

The launcher has to know where each game's EXE is. Open Tools, then Game Settings, and set the path for the GTA the server uses. Point it at the actual game executable (for example GTAIV.exe or gta_sa.exe), not a shortcut or the Steam folder.

2. The Game dropdown does not match the server

At the top of the launcher there is a Game dropdown. The server list and joins follow that choice. A player with the dropdown on San Andreas will not see, or cleanly join, a GTA IV server. Ask the host which game the server runs; on the server side it is the <game> value in server.xml, such as gta:sa or gta:iv.

3. The game version needs downgrading

GTAC hooks into specific game versions. The official FAQ is clear that Steam, Rockstar Launcher and disc copies can play, but you may need a downgraded EXE from the wiki's downgrading page.

GTA IV needs the most care. The current Complete Edition is not supported as is. GTAC works with older patches such as 1.0.7.0 and 1.0.8.0, so Complete Edition owners downgrade first. Episodes from Liberty City servers need EFLC on a supported version too. If the launcher refuses to start the game at all, version is the first suspect.

4. The launcher is stuck on Connecting or Disconnected

That means the launcher cannot reach the GTAC master list, which is different from not reaching your server. The FAQ suggests:

  1. Open the server list in a web browser to see if it is up.
  2. Check your DNS settings are valid, or switch to a public DNS resolver.
  3. Turn off any VPN, which often interferes with the launcher.

5. Side by side configuration error

This error means a Visual C++ runtime is missing. The FAQ's fix is to install the x86 Visual C++ redistributable from Microsoft, even on 64 bit Windows.

6. Stale cache after an update

If joining broke right after a GTAC update, clear the launcher cache from its Open menu and try again. Old cached client files can clash with a newer server.

7. Wrong password or no password prompt

If the server has a password in server.xml, players are asked for it on join. A typo means a refused connection, not a helpful message, so have them retype it before chasing anything else.

Host fixes

1. Open 22000 for UDP and TCP

GTAC uses two ports, which by default share the number 22000:

Setting in server.xml Default Protocol Purpose
port 22000 UDP Game traffic
httpport 22000 TCP Sends client scripts and files

Forward both protocols on your router and allow both through the firewall. With only UDP open, players often reach the server but hang while it sends resource files. Our port forwarding guide covers the router side.

2. The server is hidden

<serverbrowser>false</serverbrowser> keeps the server out of the public list. Players can still join with /connect and your address, but they will not find it by browsing. Set it to true and restart if you want it listed.

3. The wrong game is set

If you set up the server for San Andreas but your group plays GTA IV, everyone will fail in confusing ways. Check <game> in server.xml and restart after changing it.

4. A resource breaks on join

If players connect, then drop while loading, read the server console. A client script with an error, or a resource written for a different game, can kick players during download. Stop resources one at a time with stop name to find the culprit. Our guide to adding resources to a GTA Connected server covers the usual mistakes.

5. Your home connection cannot host

If port forwarding looks right and still nobody gets in, your provider may use carrier grade NAT, which makes inbound connections impossible. Compare your router's WAN IP with a "what is my IP" site. If they differ, see hosting a game server without port forwarding.

Quick reference

Symptom Likely fix
Launcher will not start the game Game path or game version
Server missing for one player Game dropdown set wrong
Server missing for everyone serverbrowser false, or ports closed
Hangs while loading resources TCP on httpport closed, or a broken client script
Launcher says Disconnected DNS or VPN on the player's PC

Take the network out of the equation

The host side of this list disappears on a hosted server. A GamezServers GTA Connected server has a fixed address with both protocols already open and DDoS protection in front. The game type, server name and server browser visibility are panel settings, server.xml and resources are in the file manager, and the live console shows exactly what happens when someone joins. That leaves only the player side checks above. For a full walkthrough, see our GTA Connected setup guide.

FAQ

Does GTA Connected work with GTA IV Complete Edition?

Not as is. Downgrade to a supported patch such as 1.0.7.0 or 1.0.8.0 first, following the downgrading page on the GTA Connected wiki.

Why does my GTA Connected server not show in the list?

Either serverbrowser is false in server.xml, or the ports are not reachable from the internet. Players can still use /connect with the address.

What port do I forward for GTA Connected?

22000 for both UDP and TCP, unless you changed port or httpport in server.xml.

Can players on different GTA games join the same server?

No. A server runs one game, set by <game> in server.xml, and every player needs that game.
