Enshrouded supports up to 16 players on a dedicated server, and that is a hard limit set by the game. The number is controlled by slotCount in enshrouded_server.json, which accepts any value from 1 to 16. Co-op sessions hosted from inside the game also go up to 16, but they only exist while the host is playing and lean on the host's PC.

How many players can play Enshrouded together?

How you play Player limit
Co-op hosted from the game Up to 16
Dedicated server Up to 16 (slotCount 1 to 16)

There is no official way past 16. If a guide promises 32 player Enshrouded, be skeptical.

Every player needs their own copy of Enshrouded. The dedicated server itself is a free download from Steam and needs no game license.

What changes as you add players?

Keen Games' own dedicated server FAQ gives the memory numbers: the server process uses about 4.4 GB of RAM when idle, each player adds up to 100 MB, and in total it should not use more than 6 GB. So memory per player is small.

What does scale with players is everything around them:

  • CPU. Every player spread across the map means more areas loaded and more enemies simulated at the same time. Keen recommends a 6 core CPU for 4 to 6 players and a stronger 8 core CPU for a full 16.
  • Bandwidth. Keen recommends 2 Mbit/s of upload per player. Sixteen players means about 32 Mbit/s of upload, which many home connections cannot spare while someone is also gaming on them.
  • World size. Enshrouded is a voxel game. Every base players build and every tunnel they dig is part of the world the server tracks, and saves grow from around 1 MB to up to 100 MB on worlds with lots of big bases.

The 16 GB figure you see in Keen's recommended specs is for the whole machine, including Windows, not just the server process.

How many players is the sweet spot?

In our opinion, 4 to 8. Enshrouded's quests, bosses and building all work well at that size, everyone can share a base, and the server has plenty of headroom. Sixteen is fun for a community, but players tend to scatter across the map, which is where CPU and bandwidth start to matter.

Two practical notes for bigger groups:

  • Set reserved slots. In enshrouded_server.json, each user group can have reservedSlots, so admins or regulars can still get in when guests fill the server. Our password and permissions guide shows how.
  • Lower slotCount if the server struggles. Keen's own docs suggest it: fewer slots means less load on CPU and RAM.

Which server size fits your group?

These are the sizes we plan our Enshrouded servers around. They give the server far more memory than the idle numbers above, because the server runs through a Windows compatibility layer on Linux, and because big bases, long uptimes and game updates all push memory up over time.

Group RAM Plan Price per month
Small group, up to 4 players 8 GB Starter 19.99 USD
Regular group with a growing base, up to 8 players 12 GB Standard 29.99 USD
Full 16 player world with large bases 16 GB Pro 39.99 USD

On GamezServers, the player limit follows your plan: the server's slotCount is set to 4, 8 or 16 to match. If your group grows, move up a plan in Settings and the new limit applies after a restart. Upgrades are prorated, so you only pay the difference for the rest of the month.

If you are not sure, start with the plan for the group you have today. Dropping a plan later is just as easy. For the general picture across games, see how much RAM a game server needs.

Hosting 16 players yourself

If you run the server on your own hardware, plan for:

  • A modern 8 core CPU with good single core speed.
  • 16 GB of RAM in the machine, so the server and the operating system both have room.
  • An SSD with at least 30 GB free.
  • Around 32 Mbit/s of upload you can dedicate to the server.
  • UDP port 15637 open and forwarded. That is the only port the server listens on in current versions, set by queryPort.

And a machine that stays on whenever anyone wants to play. That last one is usually what pushes groups to a hosted server.

Does Enshrouded get laggy with more players?

It can, when the server runs short of CPU or bandwidth. Signs are rubber banding for everyone at once, enemies freezing, or slow building. Our Enshrouded lag fix guide walks through each cause. The fast fixes are a restart, fewer slots, or more server.

FAQ

Can more than 16 people play Enshrouded?

No. 16 is the maximum for both co-op and dedicated servers, and slotCount stops at 16.

Is Enshrouded fun with 2 players?

Yes. The game scales well for a duo, and a dedicated server means either of you can play when the other is offline, with the world waiting.

Do players need to be online for the world to progress?

On a dedicated server, the world stays online with nobody playing, so anyone in the group can log in any time. Character progress is stored on each player's own PC, while world progress is stored on the server.

Can my friend play on the server while I am offline?

Yes. That is the main point of a dedicated server. In a game hosted co-op session, nobody can play once the host leaves.

Does Enshrouded 1.0 change the player limit?

Enshrouded 1.0 lands on 15 October 2026. We will update this page if Keen Games changes the limit with it.
