When loot stops spawning on a DayZ server, the Central Economy (CE) has either failed to load a file, or it thinks the map already holds enough of every item. The first happens after a typo in types.xml or a mod whose loot files are not registered in cfgeconomycore.xml. The second happens when tents, barrels and stashes full of hoarded gear count toward each item's limit. Check the server log for CE errors first, then look at what players are hoarding.
Quick check: which kind of empty is it?
| Symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Nothing spawns anywhere, not even cans, from a fresh start | CE failed to load: XML error or a broken mission folder |
| A new modded map has no loot at all | Mission folder in the wrong place or missing map loot files |
| Modded items never appear, vanilla loot is fine | The mod's types file is not registered |
| Loot was fine and slowly dried up over weeks | Nominal reached because of hoarding or long lifetimes |
| Some military items never come back | Very low nominal plus players keeping them in bases |
| Loot comes back too slowly after being taken | Respawn settings in globals.xml |
Cause 1: The economy files failed to load
One bad character in an XML file can stop the CE reading it. DayZ does not always crash, it just runs with the file ignored, which for types.xml means almost no loot.
- Stop the server.
- Open the latest RPT and script logs in the server's profile folder (the folder set by
-profiles=). - Search for
types.xml,CE,XMLanderror. A parse error usually names the file and line. - Open the file and fix the line. Common mistakes: a missing
/>or</type>, a stray<in a comment, two<types>roots after pasting entries, curly quotes from a word processor.
Validate edited files in an XML checker before uploading. Any editor that highlights XML syntax catches most of these.
If you changed several files, put the originals back from your backup, confirm loot returns, then reapply edits one at a time. The types.xml guide explains each field so you can edit with confidence.
Cause 2: A modded map with an empty economy
Custom maps ship their own mission folder with their own db/types.xml, mapgrouppos.xml, mapgroupproto.xml and cfgeconomycore.xml. Loot does not spawn when:
- The mission folder sits one level too deep (for example
mpmissions/MapName/MapName/), so the server cannot finddb/types.xml. - The
templatevalue inserverDZ.cfgpoints at the wrong folder name. - Chernarus files were copied over the map's own, so the loot positions do not match the buildings.
Use the mission folder from the map's own download, unchanged, then add your edits. See adding a custom map for the full layout.

Cause 3: A mod's types are not registered
Weapon and item mods come with their own types file. The CE only reads extra files that are listed in cfgeconomycore.xml in your mission folder:
<economycore>
...
<ce folder="custom_types">
<file name="weapons_mod_types.xml" type="types" />
</ce>
</economycore>
Put the mod's types file in a folder inside the mission (here custom_types), add the block above, and restart. Without it, the mod's items exist in the game but the CE never spawns them. Some mods ask you to paste their entries into the main types.xml instead, which works too, as long as no item ends up listed twice.
Cause 4: Hoarding has filled the nominal
Every item in types.xml has a nominal (how many the CE aims to have on the map) and a min (when it starts spawning more). By default, the count includes items in player storage:
<flags count_in_cargo="0" count_in_hoarder="1" count_in_map="1" count_in_player="0" crafted="0" deloot="0"/>
count_in_hoarder="1" means items in tents, barrels, crates and buried stashes count. On a server where players have filled bases with M4s, the CE sees the nominal as already met and spawns no more, even though buildings are empty.
Options:
- Set
count_in_hoarder="0"for items you want to keep spawning regardless of base storage. This makes the economy richer over time, so do it for selected items, not everything. - Raise
nominalandminfor the items that ran dry. - Wipe old bases, or lower lifetimes so abandoned tents and stashes decay sooner.
- Check
count_in_playerandcount_in_cargotoo. They are usually off by default, but some loot packs turn them on.
Cause 5: Respawn settings are too slow
In the mission's db/globals.xml, a few values control how fast the CE refills:
| Setting | Typical default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
RespawnAttempt |
2 | Attempts per cycle to spawn an item |
RespawnLimit |
20 | Max items of a type spawned per cycle |
RespawnTypes |
12 | Max item types handled per cycle |
RestockMax |
20 | Max items restocked per cycle |
InitialSpawn |
100 | Percent of nominal spawned on a fresh start |
Check your own file for the current values, since they change between versions and map files. Raising RespawnLimit and RespawnTypes refills faster at a small CPU cost. Change one or two at a time and watch server performance.
Cause 6: Loot is there but everyone thinks it is gone
On a busy server, the CE refills buildings over time and players loot them minutes later. Typical pattern: towns near spawns are always empty, while inland villages are full. That is normal economy pressure, not a bug. Lowering lifetime for common items or raising nominal for food and basics helps new spawns without flooding the map with military gear.
A clean reset of the economy
If the CE is in a mess after lots of edits, a loot only wipe gives it a clean start without touching player bases in some setups. The wipe guide explains what lives in storage_1 and how to reset loot only.
Doing it on a hosted server
On a GamezServers DayZ server, the mission folder, types.xml, globals.xml and cfgeconomycore.xml are in the file manager, the server starts with -dologs -adminlog -freezecheck so CE errors land in the logs, and one click backups let you undo a bad edit. Workshop mods download on every start from the IDs in the panel. To run a server for your group, see DayZ server hosting.

FAQ
Why is there no loot on my DayZ server?
The economy files failed to load, often after an XML typo, or the map's mission folder is wrong. Check the server logs for errors mentioning types.xml.
Why did loot stop spawning after weeks of play?
Items stored in tents and barrels count toward their nominal when count_in_hoarder is 1. Once the nominal is met, the CE stops spawning them.
Do I need a wipe to fix loot?
Not for XML errors or settings. Fix the file and restart. A wipe helps only when the economy is clogged by old storage.
How long does DayZ take to respawn loot?
It refills a little each cycle, controlled by globals.xml. A completely looted town can take a while to fill again, longer on busy servers.
