How to join your Minetest server
- 1
Install Luanti on Windows, macOS, Linux or Android.
- 2
Open the Join Game tab.
- 3
Enter
203.0.113.24as the address and {port} as the port. - 4
Type a player name and password, then click Login or Register. Enter the server password from your panel if it asks for one.
Common problems
Players don't need to install the game or mods first. The client downloads the server's media on join, which can take a minute the first time.
Change Game name only to a game that is already uploaded or fetched from ContentDB. A wrong id stops the server from starting.
Set your admin name before you first join, then log in with that exact name. Grant others rights in chat with /grant <name> <privilege>.
Joined with the wrong password? New accounts are registered on first login, so pick the name and password carefully the first time.
Server not responding
Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.
Use the server address
Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.
No port forwarding or firewall changes
Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.
Modding your Minetest server
Mods and games come from ContentDB, the community content site built into Luanti. Upload mods into the server's mods folder with the file manager or SFTP and enable them in the world's world.mt.
Minetest server hosting, explained
Luanti is the free, open source voxel engine that was called Minetest until October 2024. The engine is the base, and what you play is a game installed on top: Minetest Game for classic building, VoxeLibre or Mineclonia if your group wants something close to Minecraft, NodeCore for a puzzle survival twist. Servers run from a few friends building a shared town to public survival worlds with factions, shops and protected land.
Running your own server means the world never pauses and nobody has to leave their PC on. Luanti servers are often run by schools, families and small communities because the game is free on every platform, including Android, so anyone can join without buying anything. Protection mods like areas let players claim their builds, and the privilege system lets you hand out building, flying or teleport rights one player at a time.
In the panel you set the admin player, server name, description, message of the day, max players, password and world name, and choose which game runs. Community download fetches a game straight from ContentDB if you give its name and author. Mods go into the mods folder through the file manager. Turn the server list option on to show up for strangers, or leave it off and share the address.
Memory depends on the game and mods far more than the engine. Minetest Game with a few friends is happy on 2 GB. VoxeLibre or Mineclonia with a handful of mods and a map that keeps growing wants 4 GB. Public servers with big mod packs, heavy mapgen and 30 or more players at once are where 8 GB makes sense.

Common questions
Is Minetest the same as Luanti?
Yes. The project renamed itself Luanti in October 2024. Servers and clients work the same way, and old Minetest worlds load fine.
How many players can a Luanti server hold?
The Max Players setting starts at 15 and can go much higher. Real capacity depends on your game and mods, and most busy public servers sit between 20 and 50.
How do players connect?
Open the Join Game tab, enter the address and port, pick a name and password, then click Login or Register.
Can I run VoxeLibre instead of Minetest Game?
Yes. Turn on Community download and enter the ContentDB package name and author, then set Game name to that game. Players don't need it installed beforehand.
How do I add mods?
Download them from ContentDB, upload them to the server's mods folder and enable each one in the world's world.mt with load_mod_<name> = true. Clients get the mod media automatically.
How do I become admin?
Put your player name in the admin name setting before you first join. That account gets all privileges, and you can grant others rights with /grant.
Can Android players join?
Yes. Luanti runs on Android as well as Windows, macOS and Linux, and all of them can join the same server if their version is recent enough.
How do I keep it private?
Turn off Show in server list and set a server password. New players then need that password to register.
Is GamezServers affiliated with Minetest?
No. You rent and control your own dedicated Minetest server. GamezServers is not affiliated with the game's developer or publisher.
Can my friends and I split the cost?
Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.
Can I build a custom plan?
Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.
Can I pay once instead of a subscription?
Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.
How fast is setup, really?
Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
