On a Veloren server you become admin by typing admin add <username> admin in the server console (the terminal or your host's live console), not in game chat. After that, chat commands that start with / unlock: moderators get /kick, /ban, /tp, /site, /whitelist and /safezone, and admins also get world tools like /time, /give_item, /kit, /weather_zone and build area permissions. Type /help in game to see the commands your role can use.
Two places to type commands
Veloren has two separate command systems, and mixing them up is the first stumbling block.
| Where | What it is | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Server console | The veloren-server-cli terminal, or the live console on a hosted server |
admin add Mira admin |
| Game chat | Chat box in game, commands start with / |
/kick Griefer spamming |
The server console handles a short list of server management commands. Everything else happens in chat.
Server console commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
admin add <name> admin |
Makes a player a permanent admin |
admin add <name> moderator |
Makes a player a permanent moderator |
admin remove <name> |
Removes their role |
list-players |
Shows who is online |
send-global-msg "<text>" |
Broadcasts a message to everyone |
disconnect-all-clients |
Drops every player, handy before maintenance |
shutdown graceful <seconds> |
Warns players and shuts down after the delay |
shutdown cancel |
Cancels a pending shutdown |
shutdown immediate |
Stops right away |
Roles are saved in userdata/server/server_config/admins.ron. The Veloren book recommends admin add and admin remove over editing that file by hand, and there is deliberately no in game command that grants a permanent role.
The name is the player's Veloren account username, the one they log in with, not their character name.
Admin versus moderator
Each chat command has a minimum role. Moderators handle people. Admins also handle the world.
| Role | Typical use |
|---|---|
| Moderator | Trusted players who keep order: kick, ban, teleport to problems, whitelist friends |
| Admin | The owner and co-owners: everything moderators do, plus time, items, spawning and build areas |
Give moderator to most helpers. Admin commands can spawn items and creatures, which spoils a survival world fast if handed out casually.
Moderation commands (moderator and up)
| Command | Example | What it does |
|---|---|---|
/kick <name> [reason] |
/kick Bob afk in dungeon |
Disconnects a player with a reason |
/ban <name> [overwrite] [duration] [reason] |
/ban Bob true 1d griefing |
Bans a player, for a set time if you give one |
/ban_ip <name> ... |
/ban_ip Bob true 7d alt accounts |
Bans by username and IP |
/unban <name> |
/unban Bob |
Lifts a ban and any linked IP ban |
/whitelist add <name> |
/whitelist add Mira |
Adds a player to the whitelist |
/whitelist remove <name> |
/whitelist remove Bob |
Takes them off |
/tp <player> |
/tp Mira |
Teleports you to another player or entity |
/site <name> |
/site Lakeside |
Teleports you to a named town or site |
/safezone [range] |
/safezone 50 |
Creates a safe zone around you |
/sudo <player> /<command> |
/sudo Bob /kill |
Runs a command as another player |
The overwrite flag in /ban matters when a player is already banned: pass true to replace the old ban with the new duration and reason. Bans are stored in banlist.ron with who banned whom and why, so you have a record if there is a dispute later.

World commands (admin)
| Command | Example | What it does |
|---|---|---|
/time <value> |
/time dawn |
Sets the time: midnight, night, dawn, morning, day, noon or dusk |
/time_scale <n> |
/time_scale 2 |
Speeds up or slows down the day |
/weather_zone <kind> [radius] [time] |
/weather_zone storm 500 300 |
Spawns clear, cloudy, rain, wind or storm weather around you |
/give_item <item> [amount] |
/give_item common.items.food.apple 10 |
Gives you an item by its asset path |
/kit <name> |
/kit then Tab to see kits |
Gives a predefined set of items |
/goto <x> <y> <z> |
/goto 1000 1000 300 |
Teleports you to coordinates |
/kill_npcs [radius] |
/kill_npcs 50 |
Clears NPCs around you |
/set_motd <message> |
/set_motd Welcome! Read #rules |
Sets the message of the day |
/battlemode_force <pvp/pve> |
/battlemode_force pve |
Changes your own battle mode without the town and cooldown checks |
/adminify <name> [role] |
/adminify Mira moderator |
Gives a player a temporary role until they log out |
Item paths follow the game's asset folders, all starting with common.items.. Chat auto completes them with Tab, which beats guessing.
/adminify is the safe way to hand someone moderator powers for one evening, such as running an event. It does not write to admins.ron.
Build areas
Veloren has a build mode for editing terrain, but players can only build inside areas an admin has granted them:
- Create an area with
/area_add <name> build <xlo> <xhi> <ylo> <yhi> <zlo> <zhi>, using world coordinates. The debug overlay (F3) shows your current position, which makes the corners easy to read off. - Grant yourself the area with
/permit_build <area_name>, or grant a player by running it as them:/sudo <player> /permit_build <area_name>. - The player toggles building with
/build. - Remove access with
/revoke_build <area_name>, or/revoke_build_all.
/area_list shows existing areas and /area_remove deletes one. This is how servers run community build projects without letting anyone dig up the starting town.
Commands every player can use
These need no role, and it helps to post them in your server description:
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
/help |
Lists commands available to you |
/players |
Who is online |
/battlemode pvp or /battlemode pve |
Switches your PvP flag, in a town, when the server uses PerPlayer mode |
/motd |
Shows the server description |
/tell <name> <msg> |
Private message |
/say, /region, /world, /group |
Chat to players in shouting distance, your region, the whole server or your group |
/battlemode only works when battle_mode in settings.ron is PerPlayer, and only inside a town with a cooldown between switches. Our Veloren server setup guide explains the setting.
Keeping admin under control
- Keep the admin role to the owner and one backup.
- Use moderator plus
/adminifyfor event helpers. - Review
banlist.ronnow and then, and lift expired disputes with/unban. - If a moderator account is compromised,
admin remove <name>in the console takes effect at once. - If a banned or unlisted player reports a login error, our guide to Veloren connection errors explains each message.
Running admin on a hosted server
On a GamezServers Veloren server, the panel's live console is the server console, so admin add, list-players and send-global-msg work there directly, and admins.ron, banlist.ron and whitelist.ron are in the file manager if you want to read them. There is no port to forward, the build channel is a panel setting, and a one click backup is worth taking before handing out admin to someone new.

FAQ
How do I make myself admin on a Veloren server?
Type admin add <your username> admin in the server console. It does not work from game chat.
Why does a command say I don't have permission?
Your role is too low for it. Many world commands need admin, while kick and ban need moderator. Check /help for your list.
How do I ban someone for a set time?
Use /ban <name> true 1d <reason>. The duration is optional, and without it the ban is permanent.
Can I give admin from inside the game?
Only temporarily, with /adminify. Permanent roles come from the server console.
How do I change the time of day?
As admin, type /time with midnight, night, dawn, morning, day, noon or dusk.
