A Rust server needs about 8 GB of RAM for a small 3000 map with up to 50 players, 12 GB for a standard 4000 map with up to 100, and 16 GB for large or custom maps and heavy plugin packs. Facepunch lists 12 GB of free RAM and 15 GB of SSD space as the baseline. A fast CPU core matters more than many cores, and memory climbs through every wipe.

What are the official Rust server requirements?

Facepunch's Creating a server guide gives a short baseline:

  • RAM: 12 GB free, with a note that a 6000 size map uses more.
  • Disk: 15 GB free, SSD or NVMe highly preferred.
  • OS: RustDedicated runs on Windows and Linux.

That baseline describes a typical community server. Real needs swing a lot with map size, player count, how far into the wipe you are and which plugins you run.

How much RAM does a Rust server need?

Server RAM
Small map around 3000, up to 50 players 8 GB
Standard 4000 map, light plugins, up to 100 players 12 GB
Large map, custom map or heavy plugin pack, 100 to 200 players 16 GB
6000 map or very busy public server 16 GB or more, watch it closely

Three things drive memory:

  1. Map size. server.worldsize runs from 1000 to 6000 and defaults to 4500. The map is loaded into memory in full, and a bigger map holds more monuments, more NPCs and more room for bases.
  2. Entities. Every wall, door, box, furnace, sleeping bag and dropped item is an entity. The count climbs from the first hour of a wipe to the last, and memory climbs with it. A server that looks comfortable on day one can be short on memory by the last week.
  3. Plugins. Each Oxide or Carbon plugin adds a little. A few quality of life plugins are cheap, while big event, economy and UI packs add up.

Size for the end of the wipe, not the start. If the server runs out of memory late in a wipe it crashes or stalls, usually on a busy evening. Our general guide to how much RAM a game server needs explains why headroom matters.

What map size should I pick for my player count?

The map should match your real peak, not your hopes. A big empty map uses more RAM and feels dead.

Peak players Map size Typical RAM
2 to 10 friends 2000 to 3000 8 GB
10 to 50 3000 to 3500 8 to 12 GB
50 to 100 3500 to 4500 12 GB
100 to 200 4500 and up 16 GB

Changing the size or seed generates a new map, so it is a map wipe. The details are in how to change the Rust map size, seed and custom maps.

What CPU does a Rust server need?

Rust simulates most of the world on one main thread, so single core speed is what keeps server FPS up. A modern CPU with high clock speed beats an older many core server chip. Two to four fast cores is plenty for a community server, since the extra cores handle networking, saving and the operating system.

Watch the server framerate rather than CPU percentage:

serverinfo
server.fps

serverinfo shows players, entity count, framerate and memory in one line. Below about 30 server FPS, players start to feel rubber banding. If FPS sinks as the entity count grows, the CPU is falling behind the world, and more RAM will not fix it. Our Rust lag and low FPS fix goes through every cause. Do not raise server.tickrate from its default of 10 to "fix" lag: it adds work for every player. For the hardware side in general, see the best CPU for a game server.

How much disk space does a Rust server need?

About 15 GB for the game files, plus room for saves and backups. The disk type matters more than the size:

  • Use an SSD or NVMe. Every autosave writes the whole world. On a slow disk the save takes longer, and the server freezes for the length of the save.
  • Leave space for backups. Keep at least one copy of the map and save before force wipe day, plus your server.cfg, users.cfg and plugin configs.
  • Saves grow through the wipe as entities pile up, then reset at the next map wipe.

The save interval trades crash safety against hitching. server.saveinterval defaults to 600 seconds. We start our servers at 300, and anything much lower causes visible stutters on a busy server.

How much bandwidth does a Rust server need?

Rust sends a lot of data per player: positions, buildings and items around them. For a home server, upload speed is usually the first limit you hit, well before RAM. A connection that handles a small friend group can struggle with 50 players, and a home connection also exposes your IP to every player. Data center servers do not have that ceiling. Can I run a Rust server on my gaming PC?

You can, but it is tight. The Rust client itself wants a lot of memory, and the server wants 8 to 12 GB on top. A 16 GB PC cannot comfortably run both at once, and 32 GB is the realistic minimum if you play on the same machine. The PC also has to stay on for the whole wipe, or the world stops while you sleep. Rust plans on GamezServers

Our Rust server hosting plans follow the same sizing as the table above:

Plan RAM Player slots Price a month
Starter 8 GB 50 19.99 USD
Standard 12 GB 100 29.99 USD
Pro 16 GB 200 39.99 USD

You can upgrade or downgrade anytime, so starting on Standard and moving up if late wipe memory gets tight costs nothing extra. Every plan has DDoS protection and full file access over SFTP, and new customers get 50% off the first month on monthly plans.

FAQ

How much RAM do I need for a Rust server?

8 GB for a small map with friends, 12 GB for a standard 4000 map with up to 100 players, and 16 GB for large maps or heavy plugins.

What are Facepunch's minimum Rust server requirements?

12 GB of free RAM, more for a 6000 map, and 15 GB of free disk space, preferably SSD or NVMe.

Why does my Rust server use more RAM every day?

Entities. Every building block and item placed during a wipe stays in memory until the next map wipe, so usage climbs all wipe.

Is CPU or RAM more important for Rust?

Both, for different problems. Too little RAM crashes the server late in a wipe, while a slow CPU core causes low server FPS and rubber banding.

Does map size affect Rust server performance?

Yes. Bigger maps load more into memory, hold more NPCs and let players spread out, which costs RAM and CPU. Pick the smallest map that fits your peak player count.
