Rust Server Not Showing in Server Browser? How to Fix It
Rust server not showing in the Community or Modded tab? Fix the query port, browser filters, wrong tab and version issues, and join by F1 connect meanwhile.

If your Rust server is not showing in the server browser, the most common causes are a query port that is not reachable, looking in the wrong tab (servers with plugins only appear under Modded), browser filters hiding it, or simply not waiting long enough. The server can be perfectly fine while this happens: friends can still join with client.connect in the F1 console. This guide walks through each fix in order.
Quick fix
- Join directly: press F1 in Rust and type
client.connect youraddress:28015. If that works, the server is fine and only the listing is the problem. - Wait 10 to 30 minutes after the server starts. New servers take time to appear.
- Check the right tab: Modded if you run Oxide or Carbon plugins, Community if not.
- Clear the browser filters and search the exact hostname.
- Self hosting? Make sure the query port (28017 UDP in most setups) is forwarded and matches
server.queryport.
Step 1: Test with a direct connect
Before changing anything, confirm the server itself works. In Rust, press F1 and type:
client.connect 203.0.113.10:28015
using your own address and game port.
- It connects: the server is fine. The problem is only the listing, so keep reading.
- It times out: the server is not reachable at all. Check that it is running and that the console shows
Server startup complete, then check port forwarding (Step 4).
Step 2: Give it time
A fresh server does not appear the second it starts. The first boot generates the map, which takes several minutes on a 4000 size map, and then the Steam master server needs time to pick it up. Give it 10 to 30 minutes before troubleshooting further. Restarting over and over resets that clock.
Step 3: Look in the right tab with the right filters
The Rust browser splits servers into tabs, and the filters hide more than people expect.
- Modded vs Community: a server running Oxide or Carbon is listed under Modded, not Community. This catches a lot of people the day they install their first plugin.
- Search by exact name: type part of your
server.hostnamein the search box. Many servers share generic names, so use something unique while testing. - Filters: open the filter options and turn off anything that hides empty servers, full servers or servers above a ping limit. A brand new server has zero players, and some filter setups hide it.
- Favorites and History: once you have joined once by F1 connect, the server shows in your History tab. Add it to Favorites from there so friends do not need the browser at all.
Step 4: Check the query port (self hosting)
The server browser finds your server through its query port, not the game port. In the setup from our Rust self hosting guide that is +server.queryport 28017.
| Port | Protocol | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 28015 | UDP | Game traffic, what client.connect uses |
| 28017 | UDP | Query port, how the browser sees the server |
| 28016 | TCP | RCON, not needed for the browser |
Common mistakes:
- Forwarding the query port as TCP. It must be UDP.
- Forwarding 28015 only. Direct connect works, but the server never lists.
- The launch line sets a different
server.queryportthan the port you forwarded. - The Windows firewall blocking
RustDedicated. Allow it on both private and public networks. - Your internet provider uses CGNAT, so no forwarding rule can work. Our port forwarding guide shows how to check.
This is the step where a hosted server saves the most time: with a GamezServers Rust server the ports are already open in the data center, so there is nothing to forward.
Step 5: Check the version after an update
On the first Thursday of every month Facepunch releases a big update. Until your server updates too, players on the new client cannot see or join it properly. Self hosters run the SteamCMD update (app ID 258550) and restart. On a hosted server, press Restart in the panel so it updates. The same day is also force wipe, so see how to wipe a Rust server at the same time.
Step 6: Make the listing stand out
Once the server is listed, make it easy to find and worth clicking. In server.cfg:
server.hostname "Chill Vanilla | Weekly Wipe | Friends"
server.description "Wipes Thursdays. Small group, no raiding offline."
server.tags "weekly,vanilla"
server.headerimage "https://example.com/banner.png"
server.tags feeds the browser filters, so players filtering for weekly or vanilla servers can find you.
Sleep and restarts hide the server too
A server that is stopped, restarting or asleep does not answer browser queries. On GamezServers, Sleep when empty stops the server after 90 minutes with nobody online, which is great for a private group but means it drops out of the list. If you want strangers to find you, turn it off in Settings.
Common causes at a glance
| Symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Direct connect works, not in list | Query port, wrong tab, filters, or not waited long enough |
| Direct connect times out | Server offline or game port not forwarded |
| Disappeared after installing plugins | It moved to the Modded tab |
| Disappeared on the first Thursday | Server needs updating |
| Disappears overnight | Server stopped or asleep |
FAQ
How long does it take for a Rust server to show in the browser?
Usually 10 to 30 minutes after the first startup completes. Map generation on the first start adds several minutes on top.
Why is my Rust server in Modded and not Community?
Rust lists every server running a plugin framework like Oxide or Carbon under Modded. That is expected, and players can still find it there by name.
Can friends join if the server is not in the list?
Yes. Press F1 and use client.connect with the address and port. After that, the server appears in their History tab and they can favorite it.
Do I need to forward port 28016?
No. 28016 TCP is RCON for remote admin tools. The browser needs the query port, and joining needs the game port.
