How to Give Enchanted Items on a Minecraft Bedrock Server

Bedrock has no one line enchanted /give. Use /give then /enchant, add JSON components like keep_on_death, and copy prize chests with /structure.

On a Minecraft Bedrock server you give an enchanted item in two steps: /give the item, then have the player hold it while you run /enchant <player> <enchantment> <level>. Bedrock's /give cannot add enchantments by itself, unlike Java, and /enchant refuses levels above the normal maximum. For prizes you want to hand out again and again, build the kit once in a chest and copy it with /structure. This guide covers all three, plus the JSON components Bedrock does support.

Before you start

  • Commands from chat need cheats on. Set allow-cheats=true in server.properties, or the Allow cheats setting in the GamezServers panel, and restart. Cheats switch off achievements in that world.
  • The console does not need cheats. Commands typed in the server console run with full rights and without a leading slash.
  • Quote names with spaces. Gamertags like Big Steve 42 must be written "Big Steve 42" in commands.
  • You need operator rights to run these in chat. The Bedrock commands list covers op and the permission command.

Step 1: Give the item

The Bedrock syntax is:

give <player> <item> [amount] [data] [components]

Examples from the server console:

give "Steve" diamond_sword
give "Steve" netherite_pickaxe 1
give @a golden_apple 5

data is an old value for item variants. Use 0 when you need to fill the slot to reach the components after it.

Step 2: Enchant what they are holding

/enchant works on the item in the player's main hand, so ask the player to select the slot first. Then run one command per enchantment:

enchant "Steve" sharpness 5
enchant "Steve" unbreaking 3
enchant "Steve" mending 1
enchant "Steve" looting 3

For a pickaxe:

enchant "Steve" efficiency 5
enchant "Steve" fortune 3
enchant "Steve" unbreaking 3
enchant "Steve" mending 1

Bedrock checks the rules a survival enchanting table would, so these fail:

  • A level above the maximum, like sharpness 10.
  • Enchantments that conflict, like fortune on a pickaxe that already has silk_touch, or mending on a bow that has infinity.
  • An enchantment that does not fit the item, like sharpness on a helmet.

When it fails, the console says so and nothing changes. When it works, the player's item shines straight away.

Common enchantment IDs: protection, fire_protection, blast_protection, projectile_protection, feather_falling, respiration, aqua_affinity, thorns, depth_strider, frost_walker, soul_speed, swift_sneak, sharpness, smite, bane_of_arthropods, knockback, fire_aspect, looting, efficiency, silk_touch, unbreaking, fortune, power, punch, flame, infinity, luck_of_the_sea, lure, mending, multishot, piercing, quick_charge, riptide, loyalty, impaling, channeling, density, breach and wind_burst.

Step 3 (optional): Add item components

Bedrock's /give accepts a small set of JSON components after the data value. They are handy for event gear and starter kits:

give "Steve" diamond_sword 1 0 {"minecraft:keep_on_death":{}}
give "Steve" compass 1 0 {"minecraft:item_lock":{"mode":"lock_in_inventory"}}
give "Steve" diamond_pickaxe 1 0 {"minecraft:can_destroy":{"blocks":["stone","deepslate"]}}
give "Steve" oak_planks 64 0 {"minecraft:can_place_on":{"blocks":["grass_block"]}}
Component What it does
minecraft:keep_on_death The item stays in the inventory when the player dies
minecraft:item_lock with lock_in_inventory Cannot be dropped or moved out of the inventory
minecraft:item_lock with lock_in_slot Cannot be moved from its hotbar slot at all
minecraft:can_destroy In adventure mode, the item can break only the listed blocks
minecraft:can_place_on In adventure mode, the block can be placed only on the listed blocks

Combine several by putting them in the same braces:

give "Steve" diamond_sword 1 0 {"minecraft:keep_on_death":{},"minecraft:item_lock":{"mode":"lock_in_inventory"}}

Then hold it and run /enchant as in Step 2. Components and enchantments stay together on the item.

Custom names are not available as a component. Rename with an anvil, or use the structure trick below to copy a renamed item.

Copy finished kits with /structure

When you give the same prize often, set it up once by hand and let the game copy it:

  1. In a quiet corner, place a chest and fill it with the finished items: enchanted at an anvil or with /enchant, renamed, books included.
  2. Stand next to it and save it, using the chest's coordinates for both corners: /structure save prizekit 100 64 200 100 64 200 false disk
  3. Next time, load a copy wherever you want it: /structure load prizekit ~ ~ ~

The copy keeps every enchantment, name and component on the items in the chest. This is also the only plain vanilla way to hand out enchanted books from a command, since /enchant is meant for gear in hand. Saved structures live inside the world folder, so they move with the world and are included in your backups.

Common errors

Message or symptom Cause
Unknown command in chat Cheats are off or you are not an operator
No targets matched selector Name misspelled, not quoted, or player offline
Enchant fails on a level Above the maximum for that enchantment
Enchant fails on a held item Conflicts with an existing enchantment, or wrong item type
Components ignored Missing data value before the JSON. Use 1 0 {...}
JSON syntax error Straight quotes only, no spaces in component names

Running commands without being in the game

On a GamezServers Bedrock server you can type all of these in the live console in the control panel from a browser, without cheats on and without logging in, as long as the player is online for /enchant. The panel also has an allowlist switch and buttons for common jobs, and one click backups so a botched /structure load is easy to undo. FAQ

Can you /give an enchanted item in one command on Bedrock?

Not with vanilla commands. Use /give, then /enchant while the player holds the item, or load a saved structure that contains enchanted items.

How do I give Sharpness 10 on Bedrock?

Vanilla /enchant stops at the normal maximum, Sharpness 5. Going higher needs an add-on that adds its own command or item. On a server with add-ons, check the add-on's own instructions.

Why does /enchant say the player is not holding a valid item?

The selected hotbar slot is empty or holds something that cannot take that enchantment. Ask the player to select the item and run the command again.

Do I need cheats for the server console?

No. The console runs commands with full rights whatever the cheats setting is. Cheats matter only for commands typed in the game chat.
