To choose a game server location for low ping, put the server in the region where most of your players live, not where you live. Distance sets the floor for ping, about 1 ms of round trip per 100 km in fibre at best. For mixed groups, pick the location that keeps the farthest regular player under about 100 ms.

Location is the one thing about a server you cannot fix with more RAM or a faster CPU. This guide shows how to work out where your players are, how to test real ping before you commit, and which compromises work for groups split across countries or continents.

Why does server location affect ping?

Server location affects ping because data travels through fibre at roughly two thirds of the speed of light, about 200 km per millisecond, and has to make the round trip. Real routes are longer than a straight line and pass through routers, so actual ping is usually well above that minimum.

Distance from player to server Best possible round trip Typical real ping
Same city, under 100 km About 1 ms 5 to 20 ms
Same country, about 1,000 km About 10 ms 20 to 40 ms
Across the US or Europe, 3,000 to 4,000 km 30 to 40 ms 50 to 90 ms
Across the Atlantic, about 6,000 km About 60 ms 75 to 110 ms
US to Asia or Australia, 10,000 km and more 100 ms and more 150 to 250 ms

The real numbers depend on your internet provider's routing and your home Wi-Fi, but the pattern always holds: every extra 1,000 km costs you ping no hardware can win back. What ping numbers feel like in different games is covered in what is a good ping for gaming.

How do you find the best location for your group?

Map where your regular players are, weight them by how much they play, then pick the location that gives the fewest people bad ping. It takes five minutes and saves you from moving a server later.

  1. List the regular players and their city or region. Only count people who play every week.
  2. Mark the competitive ones. Players in shooters and PvP feel ping far more than builders.
  3. Find the cluster. If 6 of 8 players are in the eastern US, the server goes in the eastern US.
  4. Check the outliers. Make sure the farthest regular player stays under about 100 ms for survival games or about 60 ms for shooters.
  5. Test before you commit. Use the steps below, and buy monthly so you can move if the test was wrong.

Which region should a mixed group choose?

When a group is split across regions, put the server on the side of the ocean with more players, or at the point between them that keeps everyone playable. A server in the middle that everyone finds acceptable beats one that is perfect for half the group and unplayable for the rest.

Your group Good server location Why
All in one country A city in that country, near the middle Everyone gets low ping
East and west US Central US, for example near Chicago or Dallas Splits the difference, about 30 to 50 ms each way
US and Western Europe US East Coast, or the UK if most are European The Atlantic link is short and fast from there
Western and Eastern Europe Central Europe, for example Germany Short routes to most of Europe
Europe and the Middle East South or Central Europe Better routes than placing it farther east
Australia and New Zealand Sydney Routes out of Oceania are long
US West and Asia US West Coast Pacific cables land there
Europe and Asia Usually pick one side Either side is far for the other

Some combinations have no good middle. A group split between Europe and Australia will always have someone over 200 ms. In that case, either run the server where the most active players are, or run two servers.

How do you test ping to a server location?

Test ping from every player's real connection, not from your own. The simplest test is a ping to the server's address, which works for any host that gives you one before or right after buying.

On Windows, open Command Prompt and run:

ping 203.0.113.10 -n 20

On macOS or Linux, open Terminal and run:

ping -c 20 203.0.113.10

Replace the address with the server's IP. Read the average and the max. A low average with a high max means your connection is unstable, usually from Wi-Fi. Some hosts block ping replies, so if every request times out, test in game instead, where most games show ping on the scoreboard or player list.

Three tips for an honest test:

  • Use a cable if you can. Wi-Fi adds jitter that makes any server look worse.
  • Test in the evening, when your provider's network is busiest.
  • Turn off VPNs. They route your traffic through their own servers and change the result.

Does location matter for every game?

Location matters most for fast games where milliseconds decide fights, and least for slow building and co-op games. Getting it right is worth more for a CS2 server than for a Factorio world.

Game type Examples How much location matters
Competitive shooters Counter-Strike 2 A lot, aim for under 60 ms
PvP survival Rust, DayZ A lot in fights, keep under about 80 ms
Co-op survival Valheim, Palworld, Enshrouded, 7 Days to Die Moderate, under 100 ms feels fine
Building and sandbox Minecraft, Terraria Moderate, high ping shows as block lag
Factory games Factorio, Satisfactory Low, though Factorio's lockstep netcode makes everyone feel the worst ping

If players report lag but ping is low, the problem is the server, not the location. See why is my game server lagging to tell them apart.

What about hosting at home?

A home server sits wherever you live, so it is only the best location if your friends live near you. It also adds your upload speed and your router to everyone's connection. If friends far away lag on your home server, a hosted server near the middle of the group usually fixes it. Our dedicated vs peer to peer guide explains why the host's connection matters so much.

Choosing a location with GamezServers

We do not publish a list of server locations, so if your group is spread out or you need a specific region, email support@gamezservers.com before you order to ask where your server would run. Every server gets its own address as soon as it is live, so you can run the ping test above with your whole group on day one. If the ping is not right for you, a first purchase can be refunded within 72 hours. Browse all games or read how to choose a game server host for the rest of the checklist.

FAQ

Is it better to put the server near me or near my friends?

Near the group as a whole. If you are the only player far from everyone else, putting the server near you gives everyone else worse ping for your benefit.

Can a faster server lower my ping?

No. Ping is set by distance and routing. A faster server reduces server side lag, like rubber banding from a slow tick, but it cannot shorten the trip your data makes.

What is the best server location for US and EU players together?

Usually the US East Coast, or the UK when most of the group is European. Both keep the Atlantic crossing short, at roughly 75 to 110 ms for the far side.

Does a VPN lower ping to a game server?

Rarely. A VPN adds a stop on the way, so ping usually rises. It only helps in the uncommon case where your provider routes badly and the VPN has a better path.

How many milliseconds does distance add?

At best about 1 ms of round trip per 100 km of fibre. In practice expect more, since cables do not run in straight lines and every router on the way adds a little delay.
