The ARK Survival Ascended Unreal Engine 5.8 update is planned to launch on all platforms on October 28, 2026, Studio Wildcard said in Community Crunch 525 on September 26, 2026. A Public Test Realm beta opens on Steam on October 5. Mods get recooked in between, so server owners should plan for a mod check on launch day.
What is the ARK Survival Ascended UE 5.8 update?
It is an engine upgrade, not a content drop. ARK: Survival Ascended moves from its current Unreal Engine version to Unreal Engine 5.8. Studio Wildcard calls it "one of the biggest technical milestones yet for ASA" and says the engine team is focused on "tangible performance improvements, platform-specific fixes, and stronger technical foundations" (Community Crunch 520, August 22, 2026).
The upgrade has moved a few times. In May the target was a Unreal Engine 5.7 upgrade in late Q3 (Community Crunch 505, May 2, 2026). By August the plan had become 5.8, scheduled for September 30 alongside the Therizinosaurus TLC, Cerberax and Gargantar. On September 26 the engine part was split off and pushed to October 28 so it could roll out in stages. The creatures still shipped on September 30 as planned.
When does the UE 5.8 update come out?
The full release is planned for October 28, 2026 on every platform. Here is the published schedule:
| Date | What happens | Source |
|---|---|---|
| September 30, 2026 | Game update with Cerberax, Gargantar and the Therizino TLC (no engine change) | Steam, Sept 30 |
| October 5, 2026 | Public Test Realm (PTR) beta client on Steam. Mod cooking servers go offline and CurseForge recooks mods in batches | Crunch 525 |
| October 28, 2026 | Full UE 5.8 update on all platforms. Modding reopens and a list of mods needing author action is published | Crunch 525 |
Both future dates are plans, not guarantees. The modding notes from Overwolf, which runs CurseForge, say plainly that "dates may shift, depending on testing & recooking."
What happens to mods during the UE 5.8 upgrade?
Mods are the part most likely to bite a server owner. According to the Overwolf notes quoted in Crunch 525:
- From October 5, the mod cooking servers are taken down while Studio Wildcard releases the 5.8 test client and a beta DevKit. Existing mods are recooked in batches.
- Mods with significant problems are collected into a list so their authors know what needs fixing.
- On October 28, modding reopens and that list is published.
- Expect a traffic spike: cooking time and mod moderation "may experience delays during the first few days after the update."
In plain terms, mod authors cannot publish new versions between October 5 and October 28, and some mods may need an update from their author after launch before they work again. A server that loads a broken mod can fail to start, which is the most common cause in our ARK Survival Ascended server crashing guide.
What this means for your server
Your world and settings carry over. An engine upgrade replaces the game and server binaries, not your SavedArks folder or your ini files. Still, treat October 28 like any big patch day:
- Back up before the update. Take a manual backup of the save and both ini files the day before. If something goes wrong, you can roll back.
- Update the server on the day. Clients on 5.8 cannot join a server still on the old build. Restart the server after the patch is live so it pulls the new version. Our version and connection fixes cover what to check if it does not appear.
- Check your mod list. When the list of mods needing author action is published, compare it with your
-mods=IDs. Temporarily remove any listed mod rather than letting it block startup. - Expect a slow first start. Recooked mods come down as new versions, so the first start after the update can take longer than usual.
- Do not join the PTR on your main server. The October 5 beta is a separate Steam client for testing. Your unofficial server stays on the live build, and beta players will not be able to join it.
If you self host, the update is the usual SteamCMD run with app ID 2430930:
steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 2430930 validate +quit
Will UE 5.8 make ARK servers run better?
Possibly, but nobody can say by how much yet. Studio Wildcard's stated goal is performance and stability, and earlier posts talked about hiring senior Unreal Engine engineers for "performance optimization, platform-specific bug fixes, and feature development." No server side benchmarks have been published. Do not lower your server's memory on the strength of the upgrade alone. ARK still needs around 12 GB as a floor and 16 GB for most tribes, as covered in how much RAM a game server needs.
What about World Creator?
In May, Studio Wildcard said it planned to release World Creator, an in game map editor with Lua scripting that publishes to the Mod Browser, "alongside the engine upgrade." The September posts do not repeat that promise for October 28, so treat World Creator as unconfirmed for this date until patch notes say otherwise.
UE 5.8 on a GamezServers ARK server
Our ARK: Survival Ascended servers update the game on every restart while Update on restart is on, which is the default. On October 28, once the patch is live, restart the server from the panel and it pulls the 5.8 build. If a mod is on the "needs action" list, remove its ID from CurseForge mod IDs in the panel and restart, then add it back once the author has updated it. Backups are a click away in the panel before you start. If you run a large mod list, the guide on installing mods on an ARK Survival Ascended server explains how IDs are entered.
FAQ
When is the ARK Survival Ascended Unreal Engine 5.8 update?
It is planned for October 28, 2026 on all platforms, with a Steam Public Test Realm beta from October 5. Studio Wildcard has said dates can shift with testing.
Will the UE 5.8 update wipe my ARK server?
No wipe has been announced. Engine updates replace program files, not your save, but take a backup the day before in case a mod or the update itself causes problems.
Will my ARK mods work after UE 5.8?
Most mods are recooked automatically between October 5 and October 28. Mods with significant issues go on a list for their authors, and those may not work until the author publishes a fix.
Can I play the UE 5.8 beta on my own server?
The October 5 Public Test Realm is a separate beta client on Steam for testing. Keep your unofficial server on the live build until the full release on October 28.
Why was the UE 5.8 update delayed from September 30?
Studio Wildcard moved to a staged rollout because it is "a major technical upgrade under the hood." Cerberax, Gargantar and the Therizino TLC still released on September 30.
