## About Factorio servers

Factorio has a dedicated headless server built by Wube Software. It runs the same simulation as the game without graphics or sound, so a small amount of memory keeps a factory ticking around the clock. Because Factorio is fully deterministic, every player runs the whole map on their own machine and the server keeps everyone in lockstep, which is why a fast single CPU core matters more for smooth play than a big pile of RAM.

Running the server yourself means downloading the headless build, writing a server-settings.json by hand, creating a save from the command line and forwarding UDP port 34197 on your router. A hosted server does all of that for you: pick a plan, set a name and password, choose Space Age or the classic game, and your map is online even when the player who started it is asleep. Nobody has to keep a PC on to let the night shift keep building.

Memory grows with the size of your map and the mods you load. A fresh vanilla world fits comfortably in 2 GB, Space Age with several planets and busy logistics networks wants 4 GB, and megabases or large overhaul mods are happiest on 8 GB. Upload an existing save to continue a factory you started in single player, and upgrade from the dashboard if the base outgrows its plan.

## FAQ

### How much does a Factorio server cost?

Factorio servers start at $1.25 for 3 days, with no subscription. Monthly plans are 2 GB for up to 4 players at $4.99, 4 GB for up to 8 players at $9.99 and 8 GB for up to 16 players at $19.99. Pay monthly or prepaid, split the bill with friends, and cancel any time.

### Can a player without Space Age join a Space Age server?

No. Every player needs the same mods as the server, and the expansion mods are only available to owners. Turn Space Age off before the map is made if anyone does not have it.

### Does the server need its own Space Age license?

No. The headless server includes the expansion content. Only the players need to own it.

### Can I turn Space Age on later?

You can, but research and recipes change under you, so it is best chosen before the map is made. Turning it off on a Space Age map removes everything that only exists in the expansion. Back up first either way.

### How many players can join?

Factorio has no hard player cap. Our plans are sized for 8, 16 and 32 players, and the real limit is how busy your factory is.

### Can I upload my Space Age save?

Yes. Upload the save zip into the saves folder, set Save name in the panel to its file name without .zip and restart. Upload its mods to the mods folder too.

### Can I run Quality without Space Age?

The panel switches all three together. Players need the expansion for Quality or Elevated Rails anyway.

### Do players need the same mods?

Yes, and Factorio handles it: when a player joins, it offers to download the exact mods the server runs from the mod portal.

### Can I run Space Age?

Yes, it is on by default and switches off from the panel together with Quality and Elevated Rails. Every player who joins a Space Age map needs to own the expansion. Pick before the map is made, because switching changes an existing map.

### Can I upload my single player save?

Yes. Upload the save zip from your Factorio saves folder into the saves folder, set Save name in the panel to its file name without .zip and restart. Upload its mods to the mods folder too.

### Can my friends and I split the cost?

Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.

### Can I build a custom plan?

Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.

### Can I pay once instead of a subscription?

Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.

### How fast is setup, really?

Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
